The majority of us prefer to shop from the comfort of our homes, searching for the best deal, avoiding queues, and to top it all, have everything delivered to your door!

Be vigilant and avoid fly-by-night online stores, popping up everywhere, with the “too good to be true” specials; Do not take the risk to lose your money, if something sounds too good to be true, then it’s most probable a scam.

A few very handy guidlines to follow:

How to spot a potential scam?

To good to be true offers:

Be on high alert for deals and offers that over-promise.  One of the most important things you can do to keep yourself safe is to be vigilant when shopping online.

Promotional emails and how to act:

  • Never click on any links or open emails from an unknown or suspicious looking email. Rather search via your browser the site name to gain access and to view current offerings or specials. If you clicked on a link in error, never supply any personal details or banking information. They sometimes request you to pay a small administrative fee to have your free or gift delivered, but once you submit, they have access to your personal and banking information.

How to stay secure when shopping online?

  • Use a trusted internet connection!

  • Never access the internet or online shopping sites via a public or unknown Wi-Fi.  Criminals gain access to your personal details via unsecured internet networks.  Only use secure (https://) internet networks.  If you did enter your details, leave the site immediately and inform your Bank, if applicable.

  • Never use a link to access your Bank account, always use your mobile banking app or your bank’s trusted web portal.

Keep your personal details secure:

Never supply sensitive information over the phone or via email!

  • Never share your PIN, credit card details (card number, CVV numbers, one-time password (OTP), , name on card or even the expiry date) with anyone. Banks will never ask you for any of this information over phone or email.
